The Lee Public Library is looking for a part-time permanent Library Technician. Please see job description below.

This position is 14-16 hours per week including two nights and every Saturday.

High School diploma  is necessary, one year’s library experience hopeful. This person can also fill in for vacation and sick day coverage.

We are looking for a versatile, detail-oriented individual who is outgoing, loves working with the public of all ages and has a healthy outlook for the role public libraries can have in their community.

JOB TITLE:
Library Technician I, Grade 11

DEFINITION:
 A Library Technician I performs work relating to the processing and circulating of library materials, and assists patrons with their needs.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Works under the general supervision of Library Director
  • Performs varied duties in accordance with prescribed procedures which require constant attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Interacts with library patrons and other department personnel.
  • Handles confidential information.
  • Moderate physical effort required in performing duties including carrying books and audio-visual equipment
EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Circulation: Performs all circulation duties including, but not limited to:
  • Circulates, renews and checks in materials for patrons
  • Registers new borrowers and updates borrowers' records in database
  • Contacts patrons about reserves by any available means
  • Schedules use of the meeting room, equipment and museum passes
  • Handles incoming telephone calls
  • Places holds for materials.
  • Takes interlibrary loan requests and ensures their accuracy
  • Evaluates the need for repair of materials.
Technical:    Performs technical duties including, but not limited to:
  • Updates and maintains library printed materials
  • Processes new materials preparing them for circulation 
  • Repairs items as needed
  • Performs Windows updates on public and staff computers as needed
  • Assists patrons using public computers 
  • Troubleshoots minor computer functions
  • Assists patrons with use of copier
Reference:     Performs reference duties including, but not limited to:
  • Answers directional and reference questions, referring complex reference questions to the appropriate staff member
  • Provides readers' advisory service.
  • Assists patrons with use of online databases.
  • Recommends materials for purchase
General: Shares duties with library staff including, but not limited to:
  • Shelve returned materials and ensures accuracy of shelving.
  • Record daily statistics 
  • Perform opening and closing procedures including;
          o Emptying book drop
          o Turning computers on/off
          o Controlling light and heat
          o Checking circulation desk for adequate and appropriate supplies
          o Listening to and setting answering machine, taking action on messages
          o Checking locks and building security
          o Putting flag out and bringing it in          

 Takes responsibility for continuing development of job skills.
 Performs other tasks as assigned.
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

High school diploma, college course work preferred, one year of library experience.

Knowledge, Experience and Ability

Working knowledge of library practices, principles and procedures including the Dewey Decimal System, and a knowledge of books, authors and titles. Familiarity and ease of use with computers, their components and software. Knowledge of basic and some complex computer applications such as Microsoft Office products, Word and Excel. Able to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner. Able to understand and follow instructions and to work independently when required. Able to learn and adapt to new procedures and techniques.
