LIBRARY ASSISTANT II – REFERENCE SERVICES (20 hours/wk)

NATURE OF WORK

The purposes of this position are:

(1)   to perform library support services in one of more of the following departments: circulation, children's, reference and special collections, and technical services;
(2)   to independently and collaboratively provide efficient customer access to needed information and materials through extensive customer contact, using all customer service functions of the library’s automated library system software
(3)   to complete tasks requiring proficiency and experience using office productivity software, the Internet and some technology devices; may include instructing patrons and/or staff
(4)   to assist with collection maintenance, program planning and delivery, and the library’s public relations and marketing initiatives
(5)   to assist in creating a welcoming, warm and respectful environment for library patrons and staff.

Performance is subject to review according to the City's personnel plan through observation, reports and the results achieved.


EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS IN REFERENCE SERVICES

(1)   Answers basic reference questions in person, by phone, using email, etc.; explains the use of the library catalog; helps patrons find books, magazines, websites, etc.  Helps patrons obtain materials not immediately available placing holds, offering purchase requests, and submitting Inter-Library Loan orders.
(2)   Registers patrons for use of study rooms, museum passes, library programs, computer classes, etc.; explains applicable procedures.
(3)   Follows routines for keeping collections organized—shelves materials, shelf-reads, straightens, counts internal use.
(4)   Generates lists according to established criteria for the evaluation and weeding of various library collections.
(5)   Troubleshoots equipment, including computers, printers, copiers, microfilm reader-printers, etc.
(6)   Assists with special collections, local history and genealogy tasks
(7)   Supports other library services and programs.
(8)   Implements library policies, rules and procedures and assists in their evaluation for effectiveness, efficiency and contribution to customer service.
(9)   Collects statistical and other information for library use and other reports.


EXAMPLES OF OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

(1)   Operates and helps maintain office equipment and performs clerical work.
(2)   Performs such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the employee's supervisor.

ENVIRONMENT, WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT

Works in library environments which are subject to uncomfortably warm or cool temperatures.   Continuous intellectual effort is required to maintain current knowledge of library resources and services. The work requires lifting print and other materials, office equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds and being able to carry a reasonable quantity of materials from places where they are stored to places where they may be used.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES

(1)   Working knowledge of the principles and practices in one or more areas within the library and the use of information technology in assigned functions. 
(2)   Ability to provide assistance in locating relevant print, media and other materials to meet the intellectual, business, academic, cultural and entertainment needs of customers.
(3)   Strong personal example to provide a high level of service to customers.
(4)   Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with customers, co-workers, employees in other municipal departments and City officials. This includes good listening skills as well.
(5)   Demonstrated commitment to ongoing skills development and the judgment and public relations skills to deal appropriately with people.



MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have graduated from high school or have earned a graduate equivalent diploma (GED) and must have a demonstrated interest in library or related customer service work.  He/she should have proficiency and experience with office productivity software and a demonstrated ability and interest in using computers, the Internet, mobile and emerging technologies.
