Library Assistant – Children’s & Youth Services Department

Position Description: Creative, outgoing friendly and patient person needed to join a dedicated staff in the Durham Public Library’s busy Children’s & Youth Services Department. Candidate must enjoy working with children; have good communication skills, both oral and written; be computer literate, comfortable assisting patrons, able to lead programs such as storytimes for children and events and activities for teens. Must be familiar with children’s and teen literature, social media, and computer technology.

Hours: 24 hours per week. Alternating Saturday and evening availability required.

Responsibilities:

•Prepare crafts, design displays, and assist in general upkeep of the children’s and   young adult areas.
•Work with Head of Youth Services to develop the children’s and young adult collections
•Provide strong customer service; perform outreach to the schools and the community.
•Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work collegially.
•Plan and perform children’s and young adult programs in collaboration with the Head of Youth Services including planning, scheduling, and overseeing summer reading programs.
•Assist children, young adults, and adults with reference questions and help connect them to materials and information.
•Process and shelve materials and perform circulation duties as needed.
•Other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and some library experience preferred. Experience working with children; good organizational skills; knowledge of children’s literature; solid computer skills, automated circulation system preferred; ability to work independently; good sense of humor. A background check is required.

Salary: $18.00/hr

The Chesterfield Public Library, located in the heart of historic Chesterfield, NH, is looking for an energetic, collaborative person with a passion for public service. Are you forward-looking with an eye for detail? Come join our team!

The Library Assistant 1 reports directly to the Library Director and is responsible for a wide range of activities. Approximately 10-12 hours per week, including late afternoon/evenings and rotating Saturday hours. Hourly rate is $15.

Responsibilities:
•    Helping users locate library materials
•    Fielding inquiries at the service desk
•    Checking in/out library materials and reshelving
•    Managing user accounts
•    Collection maintenance and inventory projects
•    Exhibits and displays
•    Community engagement

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous library experience, or equivalent, is required. The desire to work with community members of all ages and backgrounds is essential.

HOURS WORKED: 40 HRS/WK INCLUDES EVENINGS & WEEKENDS

STARTING SALARY: Not to exceed $41,000 depending on education / experience
JOB GRADE 3


PRIMARY DUTIES
Full-time 40 hour position in public library includes some evening and weekend hours. This position assists the youth services librarians in providing library collections and services to infants through teens and their caregivers. Provides direct customer services and a welcoming environment for all visitors including leading story times, implementing programs for youth and families, assisting with room design and décor for both youth services spaces.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
BS/BA and 1 year of public library experience or High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years related experience in a public library setting required.
Other requirements include:
• Experience working with diverse populations
• Experience working with youth
• Understanding of child and teen development
• Knowledge of library services to youth and their caregivers
• Experience presenting programs for youth
• Knowledge of children’s and teen literature
• Proficiency and experience with MS Office and demonstrated ability and interest in using computers, Internet, mobile and emerging technologies as it relates to resources and services for youth and caregivers.
• Must be able to push or pull carts; moderate amount of bending, squatting, lifting, stretching.
