Full-Time Youth Librarian Position

Job Summary:  Under the direction of the Library Director, the Youth Librarian is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Youth Services and oversees all services to children and teens.  Selects and organizes materials, designs and implements programs and promotes the library in the schools and in the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages the daily operations of Youth Services to ensure the highest quality service.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of all programs and outreach efforts for youth aged 0 – 18.
  • Maintains a welcoming, helpful library atmosphere for patrons and colleagues.
  • Creates library promotional materials and displays.
  • Evaluates and selects materials for children and teens to ensure the availability of a well-rounded, current collection.
  • Plans, executes, and evaluates a wide variety of on- and off-site programs for children, teens, and/or their caregivers to heighten library visibility, market the library and its resources, and/or meet community needs.
  • Cultivates and maintains relationships within the community, including schools, other town department s and outside organizations, to strengthen the Youth Services program.
  • Promotes the library, its materials, programs and services via press releases, social media, public speaking, and other forms of written and oral communication.
  • Assists Director in developing departmental budget for materials, supplies and programs, and tracks spending versus budgets.
  • Under supervision of the Director, maintains assigned web pages on the library’s website.
  • Searches and applies for grants for children’s- and teen-related programs, services and collections.
  • Pursues professional development opportunities to maintain knowledge of the field.
  • Enthusiastically and energetically advocates for Youth Services.
  • Assumes responsibility for operation of the library in the absence of Director.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion or anticipated completion of Master’s Degree in Library Science from  ALA-accredited program.

Position Hours: This is a full-time (35 hours per week).  Evening and occasional weekend hours are required.

Salary Range: $16.50 to $18.50 per hour.  This job includes full insurance benefits, pension, vacation and paid sick time.
