Library Assistant - Technical Services, Nevins Library, Methuen, Massachusetts

 
The Nevins Library is seeking to fill a part-time Library Assistant position beginning in October 2026. The Nevins Library is a private non-profit organization that serves as the public library for the City of Methuen, a diverse community of over 53,000. The library is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, detail-oriented, compassionate team player who will provide technical services for the library, primarily cataloging and processing materials for circulation. This position works closely with all library departments to ensure the expeditious flow of new and existing materials on to the library shelves for the public. This position reports to the Head of Technical Services.

Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):
• A minimum of 2 years in a detail-oriented setting, previous library experience preferred
• Flexible, self-motivated individual with computer experience
• Strong team player and problem-solver
• Ability to work within the framework of Library policies and practices to provide excellent customer service
• All Nevins Library employees must pass a background check
• Understands and respects people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds
• Ability to communicate in any language in addition to English a plus

High School diploma or equivalent

Benefits:
Paid Time Off and Holidays, Health, Dental, Vision and Life Insurance Options. Employees of the Nevins Library are not eligible for participation in the Massachusetts State Retirement System, but do contribute to Social Security and may participate in a 403b employer match retirement savings plan.

Hiring Wage Range:
$19-$21/hour. 20 hours per week, flexible.

Head of Youth Services, Nevins Library, Methuen, MA

The Nevins Library is seeking to fill a Full Time Head of Youth Services Position beginning in April 2026. The Nevins Library is a private non-profit organization that serves as the public library for the City of Methuen, a diverse community of 53,000. The library is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, detail-oriented, compassionate leader to oversee a team of 7 staff. The Head of Youth Services supervises all aspects of service to youth ages 0-18, their families and caregivers. This includes Youth Services staff scheduling, materials selection, program development, outreach, and building community partnerships. This position works closely with the Library Leadership Team, and can have supervisory responsibility for the building, staff and patron safety, as scheduled and as needed. This position reports to the Library Director.

Qualifications

• A minimum of 3 years of appropriate public library experience serving a diverse, evolving community – Children’s or Youth services preferred
• Flexible, self-motivated individual with technology, budgeting, grant writing, and collection development experience
• Strong team player and problem-solver with significant leadership skills
• Ability to work within the framework of Library policies and practices to provide excellent customer service
• All Nevins Library employees must pass a CORI check
• Understands and respects people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds
• Ability to communicate in any language in addition to English a plus

Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week, includes nights and weekends. Flexible hours, as necessitated by departmental scheduling needs, exempt employee..

Minimum Education: A Master’s in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution

Library Assistant, Reference Services, Nevins Memorial Library, Methuen, MA

The Nevins Library located in Methuen, MA is seeking an energetic, flexible, and enthusiastic person who enjoys working with the public. The Library serves a diverse population of approximately 50,000 in a NH border community. This person will be part of a team assisting patrons from the Reference Desk, printing, shelving books and helping to maintain a neat, inviting public space.

This full-time position will include day and evening shifts, as well as rotating Saturdays.

Hours:
35 hours per week

Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):
At least one (1) year experience working with the public in a customer service role (ie: retail, hospitality, restaurant, etc).
• Understands and respects people of all abilities, ages, cultures, and backgrounds.
• Committed to excellent customer service, in-person and over the phone, with the ability to multi-task and maintain composure in a busy environment.
• Familiarity with working in a technology-oriented environment.
• Strong teamwork, excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Proficiency in a second language (especially Spanish) is preferred.

Minimum Education:
High school diploma or equivalent; 2 or more years of college-level education a plus.

Hiring Wage Range:
$20-$24 per hour, commensurate with experience and education.

Library Assistant/Librarian I, Youth Services, Nevins Library, Methuen, MA

 Plan and execute developmentally appropriate programming for: preschool-aged children (infant-5 years old), school-aged children (K to 6th grade) and teenagers (6-12th grade).

  •  Perform the routine procedures needed to open and close the Children’s Room.
  •  Provide reference service and reader’s advisory service at the Youth Services Desk, using the Internet, inhouse materials, and state-provided databases. Training will be provided.
  •  Assist patrons with the use of the online catalog, library databases, general computer use and printing tasks.
  •  Sort book carts and shelve books when needed. Participate in shelf reading all sections of Youth Services.
  •  Perform some library circulation duties: issue library cards; place patron requests for library materials within the MVLC network; check in, check out, and renew in-house programming material; accept payment to clear debts and charges for lost or damaged Youth Services materials; process hold requests for Youth Services materials.
  •  Maintain displays of Youth Services materials to include e.g., straightening materials on shelves and displaying books on shelves.
  •  Attend department and library staff meetings.
  •  Attend training as required to develop and enhance skills used serving Youth and Families.
  •  Create booklists on all types of Children’s materials in our collection as requested by the Head of Youth Services.
  •  Perform other duties as designated by the Head of Youth Services. 

 

    Bachelor’s Degree required, current MLIS students are encouraged to apply.
 

•    At least three (3) years’ experience working with preschool and/or elementary children in a library or school setting.
 

•    Able to work with a diverse population, while respecting people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds.
 

•    Committed to excellent customer service, with the ability to multi-task and maintain composure in a busy environment.
 

•    Familiarity with working in a technology-oriented environment.
 

•    Strong teamwork, excellent written and oral communication skills.

$21.00-$24.00 per hour, salary and job title commensurate with experience and education.

Library Aide (Part Time) Circulation, Nevins Library, Methuen, (MA)

 Job Description:

The Nevins Library, located in Methuen, MA, is seeking an energetic, flexible, and organized Library Aide to provide outstanding customer service to its patrons. A Library Aide in the Circulation Department primarily interacts with patrons at the Main Desk and is responsible for checking materials in and out, handling patron inquiries and issues in person and over the phone, and processing library cards. Additional tasks might include locating materials onsite or placing holds, shelving, shelf reading, and checking condition of materials. This part-time position is 8-16 hours a week, evenings until 9pm, and scheduled Saturdays. 

Minimum requirements:

Able to work with a diverse population, while respecting people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds. Ability to communicate in any language in addition to English is a plus.
• Committed to a high level of accuracy, and the ability to prioritize tasks in an active environment.
• Strong teamwork, flexibility in scheduling, and ability to work independently.
• 1-3 years’ experience in a customer service related field required.

Hiring Wage Range:

$17.00/hour
