Library Assistant, Brookline Public Library, Brookline, New Hampshire

The town of Brookline, New Hampshire (5,800 population), with its unique blend of rural charm and vibrant community, is seeking a new library team member. We are looking for a part-time Library Assistant, up to 20 hours/week. Hours include a combination of weekdays, some evenings, and Saturdays. A positive attitude and a sense of humor are vital in this role. The Library Assistant has a working knowledge of the library and performs a variety of library services for patrons and the maintenance of the collection. Brookline Public Library staff work in a team-oriented environment under the supervision of the Library Director, are responsible for assisting with library circulation, reference, readers' advisory, collection promotion, programming, in both adult and youth service areas. 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver excellent customer service for all visitors to the library. 
  • Staff the circulation desk and perform circulation functions including checking items in/out, reserving and renewing materials, collecting fees, and maintaining patron records. 
  • Shelve library materials and perform other stack maintenance activities including shelf reading and tidying, weeding.
  • Provide readers' advisory and reference services, and refer patrons to additional resources as appropriate.
  • Assist patrons with use of library services and equipment.
  • Answer phone inquiries and make patron notification calls.
  • Create book displays that promote the library's collections. 
Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):
  • Knowledge of library practices and services including alphabetization and Dewey Classification System. 
  • Ability to deal courteously and efficiently with a diverse population of library patrons. 
  • Excellent general office, computer, and technology skills including working in a Windows environment, familiarity with Web browsers and Microsoft software, experience with any Integrated Library System software. 
  • Capacity to work both independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team. 
  • Effective written and spoken communication skills, as well as the ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to maintain patron confidentiality. 
  • Physically able to carry/lift up to 35 pounds, bend low and reach high to shelve books, and push a library cart. 
  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma required, some college or a bachelor's degree preferred. 
  • Experience in a public library setting preferred.

Brookline NH Library Director Job Description:
The town of Brookline, New Hampshire (5,800 pop), with its unique blend of rural charm and vibrant community, is seeking a Library Director. This role entails providing executive leadership in the strategic delivery of Brookline’s public library services and programming, all tailored to serve the needs of the community’s residents and all library patrons. The next Library Director will lead the development of services designed to promote lifelong learning, encourage curiosity, and underscore the library's leading role in the community. Preferred candidates will have experience working in a library, ideally in a similar-sized community, and will be skilled in personnel and financial management, and communication. Candidates should have a proven record of collaborative leadership and be highly organized, innovative, team-oriented, and skilled at fostering strong relationships with town departments, boards, peers, employees, volunteers, and stakeholders.
Position Objectives:
Under broad policy guidance and direction from the Library Board, performs professional and administrative duties in planning, developing, implementing, and directing public library services for the benefit of all Brookline residents.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Administers board policies; reviews, updates, and makes policy recommendations to the board.
Acts as Library liaison to build strong relationships with the Friends of the Library organization, the Town Select board, community stakeholders, patrons, and the general public.
Works closely with the Library Board to develop the library budget, attend budget hearings, and monitor expenditures as directed by the Library Board.
Establishes good communication and outreach with the community regarding library services, the library’s important role in the community, etc.
Works with the Board in reviewing and revising the Library’s mission, long-term and short-term goals, and objectives on a regular basis.
Supervises personnel; hires and trains employees; conducts regular staff meetings for planning, development, and issue resolution; evaluates personnel; fosters professional development.
Evaluates library services and suggests recommendations for improvements.
Recommends and oversees maintenance of library facilities and equipment.
Reviews and approves selection of all materials for purchase; maintains library collections.
Participates and represents the library in professional meetings, classes, conferences, and workshops.
Performs basic computer and printer troubleshooting.
Performs other duties as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of library science's theories, principles, and objectives, including awareness of current trends and developments in the library field.
Experience in collection development and maintenance.
Proficiency with automated library systems, computer programs, and applications.
Knowledge of library reference sources, print and online.
Familiarity with children’s, young adult, and adult literature.
Ability to think analytically and creatively to develop, implement, and evaluate library programs and services.
Working knowledge of budgetary and accounting processes.
Demonstrated communication skills, including preparing comprehensive reports and presenting ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form.
Understanding of and experience with empowering members of a team to participate in organizational decision-making.
Aptitude with planning, organizing, supervising, and evaluating the work of employees
Proven ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships.
Education, Training, and Experience:
An ALA Accredited Master's in Library and Information Science is preferred. A suitable combination of education and managerial experience demonstrating mastery of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may also be considered.
A minimum of five (5) years in a library setting, with at least two (2) years of management experience, is preferred.
Demonstrated aptitude for leadership and administrative management.
Continued professional growth through participation in workshops, professional reading, conferences, or other educational opportunities.
Substantial involvement in public relations and customer service.
Experience with, or training in, fundraising, educational programming, organizational leadership, or strategic planning.

Job Title: Part-Time Library Outreach Coordinator

The Library Outreach Coordinator has a working knowledge of the library, creates, and produces programming, and performs a variety of marketing duties promoting and publicizing Library events, news, programs, and services. Brookline Public Library staff work in a team-oriented environment and, under the supervision of the Library Director, are responsible for assisting with library circulation, reference, readers’ advisory, collection promotion, programming, in both adult and youth service areas.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
• Identify methods and create materials to advertise library services, programs and reach new users.
• Updating of BPL website
• Moderating and posting to BPL social media accounts
• Create displays, exhibits, website updates, press releases and printed materials. In cooperation with Library staff, organizes and implements a variety of adult programs and special events.
• Create and maintain a database of news outlets to utilize for library publicity.
• Submit press releases and produce and place ad materials.
• Produce adult programming including take-and-makes, crafts, author visits, and educational speakers.
• Obtaining outside funding for programs, as needed and available
• Deliver excellent customer service for all visitors to the library.
• Performs other duties as required.

Additional tasks may include:

• Able to plan effectively and complete time-sensitive tasks with frequent interruptions.
• Capacity to work both independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
• Effective written and spoken communication skills, and the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Available to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours.
• Physically able to carry/lift up to 35lbs, bend low and reach high to shelve books, and push a library cart.

Education, Experience and Training:
• Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, Marketing, or Library Science preferred.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in marketing related field, with 1 years’ experience in websites, required, including experience with desktop publishing programs.
• Familiarity with library programs for adults, including multicultural programs, is desired.

The Library Assistant, Youth Services has a working knowledge of the library and performs a variety of library services to youth, young adults, and their families and the maintenance of the collection. Brookline Public Library staff work in a team-oriented environment. Under the supervision of the Youth Services Librarian, the Library Assistant, Youth Services is responsible for assisting with library circulation, reference, readers’ advisory, collection promotion, assists in collection selection, programming, in the youth service areas.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

·         Staff the youth services section of the library and perform circulation functions including checking items in/out and reserving and renewing materials.

·         Shelves library materials and performs other stack maintenance activities.

·         Provide readers’ advisory and reference services to youth, young adults, and their parents and caregivers.

·         Create displays that promote the Youth & Young Adult collections.

·         Develop, organize, and supervise arts, crafts, and/or other related activities.

·         Assists in the planning and oversight of Youth Services programming.

o   Processing and repairing materials.

The Youth Services Librarian is a dynamic, innovative & dedicated professional Librarian with a genuine passion for and commitment to working with, engaging & inspiring children of all ages and their caregivers. They plan and coordinate all aspects of youth services including collection development, community outreach and programming, as well as supervising youth services staff. All Brookline Public Library staff work in a team-oriented environment and, under the supervision of the Library Director, are responsible for assisting with library circulation, reference, readers’ advisory, collection promotion, and programming in both adult and youth service areas.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all aspects of Youth Services for the Library
  • Maintain a fun, safe, and positive environment which encourages intellectual curiosity and a love of reading.
  • Cultivate a contemporary collection for youth ages 0-18, guided by professional reviews and suggestions from staff and patrons.
  • Supervises the daily operation of the youth room and the young adult area.  Upholds the library’s behavior and child safety policies.
  • Plan, organize, and implement programs for youth birth to 18, including coordinating with other community stakeholders.
  • Provide outreach services and community relations activities to area schools, after school programs, and other community groups.
  • Shelve Youth Services library materials and perform other stack maintenance activities including shelf reading, tidying, and weeding.

  • Stay current on trends and practices related to library youth services.
  • Supervise Library Assistant for Youth Services, Pages, and Volunteers.
  • Serve as the Library Supervisor in absence of the Library Director

·         Provide readers’ advisory and reference services and refers patrons to additional resources as appropriate.

  • Assist patrons with use of library services and equipment.
  • Perform all other related duties as needed including, but not limited to:
