Processing Archivist, University of New Hampshire Library, Durham, New Hampshire

The University of New Hampshire Library invites applications for a three-year contract librarian position with possibility for renewal as a Processing Archivist at a nationally recognized R1 public research university. This position will arrange, describe, and preserve archival collections to support their long-term accessibility for researchers, students, and the broader scholarly community.

The Processing Archivist will work collaboratively with colleagues in Special Collections and Archives to process incoming and backlog collections, create finding aids and other descriptive records, and contribute to collection management, reference, instruction, acquisition, and appraisal activities as needed.

Job Description Summary:
The Processing Archivist is responsible for arranging, describing, and preserving archival collections to ensure long-term accessibility for researchers, students, and the broader scholarly community of New Hampshire and beyond. This role assesses incoming materials, establishes intellectual and physical control, and creates clear, comprehensive finding aids in accordance with professional archival standards and best practices. This role provides faculty support for reference, instruction, acquisition, and appraisal activities as needed. Early career professionals are encouraged to apply to this position.

Key Responsibilities:
Collection Processing
  • Survey, appraise, and prioritize incoming and backlog archival collections with guidance from the Special Collections Librarian and University Archivist.
  • Arrange archival materials following professional archival principles (respect des fonds, original order, provenance).
  • Rehouse materials into appropriate archival storage to ensure long-term preservation.
  • Identify preservation concerns and collaborate with preservation staff as needed.
Description and Metadata
  • Create detailed finding aids, catalog records, and inventories using standards such as D.A.C.S., E.A.D., M.A.R.C., or local metadata schemas.
  • Apply controlled vocabularies and authority records (e.g., L.C.S.H., L.C.A.H., A.A.T., S.N.A.C.).
Collection Management
  • Track and manage the progress of processing projects.
  • Recommend processing levels (minimal, baseline, full) based on collection significance, condition, and researcher needs in coordination with the University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian.
  • Contribute to collection management workflows and documentation.
  • Provide support for acquisition and appraisal activities as requested or assigned.
Collaboration & Support
  • Work closely with staff to support the Archives Processing and Access Program.
  • Participate in cross-departmental projects.
  • As needed, provide frontline reference and Reading Room support and back-up for the Public Services Coordinator. Provide instruction support, such as proctoring Reading Room, as needed.
  • As required and if opportunity arises, present and share with library faculty and staff about processing projects.
  • Engage in library, university, and professional service in alignment with position responsibilities that are relevant to their appointment. Contribute to library and university shared governance.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program with a concentration in archives.
  • 1 year of processing experience working on large collections, demonstrating familiarity with processing archival or manuscript collections (such as an internship, employment, volunteer work, etc.)
  • Familiarity with archival standards (D.A.C.S., E.A.D., M.A.R.C.) and archival management systems.
  • Knowledge of preservation principles for paper and photographic materials.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using archival management platforms such as ArchivesSpace.
  • Familiarity with processing congressional and/or political papers.
  • Familiarity with M.P.L.P. processing practices.
  • Knowledge of inclusive description practices.
  • Project management skills and experience establishing workflows.
  • Knowledge of copyright, privacy, and rights-management issues in archives.
  • This position may involve handling fragile materials, lifting archival boxes (up to ~40 lbs), and working in collection storage environments.

Compensation Pay Range: 
$75,000 to $86,000 
The rank of the selected candidate will depend upon the candidate’s qualifications.

Library Assistant–Youth Services Department, Durham Public Library, Durham, NH

We’re looking for a creative, outgoing, and friendly individual to join our dedicated team. Primary Job Responsibilities:
• Support the Youth Services Department by preparing crafts, designing displays, and maintaining children’s and teen areas.
• Assist with collection development for children’s and young adult materials.
• Provide excellent customer service and perform school and community outreach.
• Plan and deliver youth programs—including summer reading—in coordination with the Head of Youth Services.
• Assist patrons of all ages with reference and readers’ advisory.
• Handle materials processing, shelving, and circulation support.
• Maintain strong verbal/written communication and work effectively as part of a team.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:
• BA/BS from an accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience engaging with individuals of all ages,
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently,
• Proficient with technology, including Canva, Microsoft and Adobe applications, and mobile devices,
• A good sense of humor!

Other: A full FBI background check with fingerprinting, at our expense, is required.

Social Sciences Librarian, University of New Hampshire Library, Durham, NH

 

The University of New Hampshire (UNH) Library seeks a dynamic, innovative librarian for the position of Social Sciences Librarian. As liaison to the Social Sciences Departments in the College of Liberal Arts, (https://cola.unh.edu/) this position has primary responsibility for the proactive development and delivery of responsive reference, instructional, and research support. As a position that is engaged with a variety of library services, the Social Sciences Librarian actively participates in the university’s efforts to create and nurture a dynamic learning environment in which individuals of differing perspectives, life experiences and cultural backgrounds pursue goals with mutual respect and a shared spirit of inquiry. 

  

The successful candidate will have an aptitude for the teaching, use, and management of resources relevant to the social sciences. The candidate will have the ability to work with library colleagues to support scholarly communication initiatives and newly emerging modes of research and collaboration, including open science.  

  

The position is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty position with appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on qualifications. This position reports to the Dean of the University Library through the Library Faculty Chair and will be a member of relevant library programs. The incumbent is expected to conduct scholarship; actively participate in library, university, and professional engagement or service; and meet other UNH Library criteria for promotion and tenure including holding or obtaining a second advanced degree in a chosen field. Faculty members at UNH are represented by the AAUP through a collective bargaining agreement. Minimum contractual salary is $86,620 for the rank of Assistant Professor. Evening Information Services Specialist - University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH

The University of New Hampshire Library (UNH Library) is seeking a collaborative colleague to join our team as Evening Information Services Specialist, (Library Services Specialist, Operating Staff, Grade 11 with a minimum/base hourly rate of $16.81 per hour). This position typically works Monday-Wednesday, 2pm-12:30am and Thursday 2:30pm-12:30am through the Fall and Spring semesters. The schedule for this position is driven by the academic calendar and hours change during semester breaks, J-Term, and summer session. 

This role is responsible for a variety of duties that require a broad functional knowledge of library systems, standards, and policies of the Dimond Library Information Desk and library spaces to assist in maintaining an environment conducive to study and research. In accordance with established policies and procedures, this position circulates a variety of resources, registers borrowers, reconciles patron accounts, provides work direction to student employees, and prepares the library for closing. The position also reviews processes and updates process/procedure documentation within assigned areas of responsibility and assists with the production of social media and other promotional content, such as blogs, articles, and newsletter copy.
