Access Services - Night Time, Fitchburg State University, Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio Library, Fitchburg, Massachusetts

Job Description:

General Statement of Duties:

The Public Services Assistant is responsible for the operation and supervision of the Access Services Department when assigned an evening or weekend shift. Tasks include managing the circulation desk, supervising student employees, stacks maintenance, processing interlibrary loan requests, and other projects as assigned.

Supervision Received:

This position reports to the Head of Access Services and will receive direction from full-time Access Services Library Assistants. This position works under the overall direction of the Library Dean.

Supervision Exercised:

Functional supervision of part-time student employees

Detailed Statement of Duties:

Supervise and work at the circulation desk performing general circulation functions such as checking in and out library items, training and supervising students, explaining policies, and processing fines/fees.
Assist with monitoring the department's email accounts.
Assist with supervising, scheduling, and monitoring the library's study rooms.
Search and retrieve requested items from the library's collections.
Assist with scanning books and journals for interlibrary loan and document delivery.
Gather statistics and perform data entry. 
Assist patrons with using the course reserve and interlibrary loan and document delivery systems.
Assist with stacks maintenance including shelving and shelf-reading, training and supervising student assistants, and shifting collections.
Responsible for assisting students with library equipment, i.e., troubleshooting, ensuring printers are equipped with paper, and submitting I.T. work orders for equipment repairs.
Performs regular rounds of the library to monitor the safety and security of patrons, library collections, and the building. Submitting work orders for building and or other facilities issues as they arise.
When scheduled on a weekend, evening, morning or holiday, responsible for opening and closing and securing the library with support from public safety personnel in the evenings.
Assists in the planning and preparation of Library exhibits, displays and student support activities. 
Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience in a customer service environment, could include phone, e-mail, chat and face-to-face interaction.
Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, students, faculty, and other library users. 
Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
Ability to effectively assist a diverse student body, and effectively understand and adapt to cultural differences. 
Ability to organize work, to assess priorities, and to work independently.
Ability to acquire knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in academic library work.
Knowledge of Google Suite or Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint (or similar software). 
Preferred Qualifications:

Bilingual (Spanish or Portuguese speaking preferred).
Experience working in a library.
Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of supervision.
Supervisory experience, including hiring, training, scheduling and evaluations.
Demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed precision work.
Experience with an automated library circulation system, preferably ExLibris Alma/Primo.
Knowledge of interlibrary loan and document delivery procedures. 
Flexibility to cover other shifts as needed.
Additional Information:

Salary: $19.00 per hour

Shift Information:  12.5 hours per week during the academic year

Monday, 5:00-11:45 p.m.
Wednesday, 5:00-11:45 p.m.
Potential shifts: 

On a limited number of days during final examination periods, hours may extend until 12:15 a.m.

In addition to participating in and contributing to long-range and strategic planning activities for the Division of Academic Affairs, the Dean will work to establish partnerships with stakeholders across the University, the community, and the state in advancing the mission and the strategic plan of the University and the library. The Dean of the Library reports to the Provost and Executive Vice President.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work in consultation with the professional librarians and staff to define. articulate and execute the vision, strategic directions, and priorities of the library, while supporting and contributing to the university's mission and strategic plan.
Direct program development for the library, including the development of annual goals and objectives aligned to the library's strategic plan and mission, the university's Strategic Plan and the Academic Plan.
Provide administrative and academic stewardship for library facilities, collections, resources, and services.
Develop and administer operating, acquisition, grant and equipment budgets.
Oversee the development, coordination, planning, and access for print and digital collections.
Oversee recruitment and supervise library personnel under the various collective bargaining agreements.
Support and develop library personnel through strategic professional development opportunities, recognition of accomplishments, and active mentoring.
Develop and maintain a dynamic work environment that promotes diversity and inclusion and values creativity, teamwork, innovation and transparency.
Provide strategic and visionary leadership to advance the library's commitment to equal opportunity in services, collections, and spaces.
Work with schools and academic departments to foster the use of library services within all educational programs and achieve mutual goals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution (MLS or MLIS required).
Significant experience in all areas of academic library administration (including fiscal management, budget management and administration, project management, personnel management, and strategic planning) with a minimum of five years of progressive responsibility.
Strong understanding of digital technologies, scholarly communication, open access initiatives and emerging trends in library and information science.
Experience with using data and analytics to assess library services and collections, and communicate the library's value.
Experience with recruiting, hiring, managing, mentoring, and developing library personnel.
Strong interpersonal communication, leadership, and collaboration skills, both within and outside the library, including with academic departments and community partners.
Personal qualities include: integrity, good judgment, creativity, open mindedness and the commitment to working in a collaborative and diverse environment.
Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations and students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles.

Job Description:
The Full-Time Temporary Reference & Research Services Librarian will be the primary reference librarian working with the tenure-track librarians to provide reference and research services to the University community, participate in collection development liaison duties, and participate in related projects during the academic year. The Reference and Research Librarian will also assist in the supervision of student workers in reference/research duties.

Works under the guidance of the MSCA librarians, and is under the administrative supervision of the Library Dean.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Functional supervision of student worker assistants.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate in the Research Help Desk rotation. Answer both ready reference and in-depth reference questions by IM, chat, email, phone and in-person.
Create/revise reference, subject and topic research guides.
Project: Review, update and build out the Research Help Desk's FAQ on LibAnswers (Springshare platform).
Project: Participate in the redesign and conversion of the library's LibGuides (Springshare platform) based on the library's established best practices and the outcomes of a recently completed accessibility review.
Project: Develop and update ready reference video tutorials.

Shared Responsibilities:
Acts as library liaison to selected academic departments for both graduate and undergraduate programs.
Provides collection development duties - evaluation, resource selection, weeding, etc. - in selected subject areas.
Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements:

Required at Hire:
A Masters of Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited program or an equivalent Master's degree, such as a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) or a Master of Library Science and Information Science (MLS/MLIS), with degree awarded before start date.
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Substitute Reference Librarian (Part-Time), Fitchburg State University, Fitchburg Massachusetts

 Job Description:

The Fitchburg State University Library is seeking 1-4 enthusiastic Substitute Reference Librarians to fill in, on occasion, at the Fitchburg State University Library's Reference Desk. This position is an intermittent part-time position with variable hours and days (daytime, evening, and weekend coverage needed).

Statement of Duties:

The Substitute Reference Librarian will provide reference and research services to the University community.

Reference/Research Help

Provide in-person, email, online chat, phone, and appointment-based reference services to University students, faculty, staff, and public patrons, including one-to-one reference assistance, technological assistance, and statistical tracking.

Other Duties:

Assist with various departmental projects, as possible, including:
Assisting liaison librarians with collection development.
Assisting librarians in the development, creation, update and management of digital course materials, research guides (Springshare LibGuides, e.g.), and other curriculum content.
Train and supervise student workers in reference and research duties.
Participating in the development of digital collections for the Archives under the supervision of the Archivist.
Other duties as assigned.

Fall/Spring Semester hours:    

This is a substitute librarian position, hours are offered as needed. (Note: up to a maximum of 18 hours per week). Most shifts are scheduled 2 or more weeks in advance with occasional short notice requests. Fall/Spring Semesters shifts will be offered Monday-Friday between 9am and 7pm and Sunday between 1pm and 8pm.

The Spring 2025 semester begins January 15th and ends on May 16th. The Fall 2025 semester begins September 4th and ends on December 18th.

Summer Semester:

Limited hours may be available during intersessions (time between semesters) and Summer Semesters.

Minimum Requirements: MLS from an ALA accredited program or within 2 courses of completing an MLS.

Preferred Requirements: Experience providing in-person and virtual reference service, including a broad knowledge of information sources in an academic library.

Library Assistant II - (Nighttime Circulation Supervisor), Fitchburg State University, Fitchburg, MA

Job Description:

General Statement of Duties: Responsible for evening supervision of the Circulation Desk, including supervising student workers. Assists with the processing of interlibrary loans borrowing requests by Fitchburg State faculty, staff and students and lending requests from other libraries. Contributes to the smooth operation of the Access Services Department that includes Circulation, Reserve and Controlled Digital Lending, Interlibrary Loans, and Stacks Maintenance.

Fall/Spring Semesters hours*: Sunday- Thursday  3:15 pm-11:45 pm. On a limited number of days during final examination periods, hours may be adjusted to reflect a later closing time.

Summer Hours and Academic Calendar breaks: Monday - Friday 8:45 am - 5:15 pm

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for evening supervision of the Circulation Desk. Responsible for the operation of library facility in absence of supervisor.
Assume responsibility for operation of library facility in absence of supervisor.
Aids library users by responding to inquiries and providing information concerning materials, library rules and procedures and library facilities; suggests and explains the proper methods of locating and using materials to facilitate patrons' use of the library.
Assists with stacks maintenance as it relates to the non-librarian components for the General, Children's Literature, Young Adult, Oversized, and Audio/Video collections.  Participates in stacks shifts, inventory and other related duties, including supervising shelving of books and periodicals.
Work with day staff to interview and select candidates for, as well as train and supervise, part-time library assistants, and student workers.
Prepare work schedules of student workers and other subordinates; maintain weekly timesheets.
Assist in the processing of lending requests from libraries for our library materials.
Assist in the processing of borrowing requests by Fitchburg State faculty, staff and students for materials from other libraries.
Compile statistics, generate various reports, and assist with the department's annual reports.
Responsible for maintaining circulation records in the library system as well as overdue records for books loaned to other libraries.
Responsible for financial transactions for billing libraries for lost items; lost book fees collected from other libraries; billing Fitchburg State students, faculty and staff for lost Interlibrary Loans books, etc.
Assist with functions of circulation, including the blocking of delinquent patrons and study room reservations.
Assist with processing materials to be placed on reserve, both physical and electronic, including controlled digital lending.
Determines the need for equipment and supplies, and reports needs to their supervisor.
Assists in the planning and preparation of Library exhibits, displays and student support activities.
Assists Head of Access Services in ensuring that the library building is safe, clean and maintained.
Other duties as required.

Ability to work assigned schedule during the academic year, including inclement weather days, and the flexibility to vary the schedule as required.  
Must be able to pass a complete background check satisfactory to the university as well as a CORI and SORI check.

Experience working in a library.

Knowledge of the policies of the library and the University.
Experience managing student workers and part-time staff.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Preference for applicants with at least (A) one year of full time, or equivalent part-time paraprofessional experience as a library assistant and (B) any combination of the required experience and the substitution of an Associate's degree or higher.
