Library Assistant - Technical Services, Nevins Library, Methuen, Massachusetts

 
The Nevins Library is seeking to fill a part-time Library Assistant position beginning in October 2026. The Nevins Library is a private non-profit organization that serves as the public library for the City of Methuen, a diverse community of over 53,000. The library is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, detail-oriented, compassionate team player who will provide technical services for the library, primarily cataloging and processing materials for circulation. This position works closely with all library departments to ensure the expeditious flow of new and existing materials on to the library shelves for the public. This position reports to the Head of Technical Services.

Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):
• A minimum of 2 years in a detail-oriented setting, previous library experience preferred
• Flexible, self-motivated individual with computer experience
• Strong team player and problem-solver
• Ability to work within the framework of Library policies and practices to provide excellent customer service

Essential Job Functions:
- Plans and supervises the operation of the Library; assigns personnel and approves work schedules.
- Makes recommendations regarding personnel recruitment and selection, promotions, and disciplinary action, provides training and guidance to new Library personnel.
- Ensures compliance with the Town’s personnel policy and collective bargaining agreements and serves as a member of the negotiation team.
- Prepares the Library budget including staffing plan, capital improvement budget, and community preservation grants; writes and administers library-sourced grants.
- Serves as the chief purchasing agent of the Library, directing expenditure of Library funds and the selection and purchase of patron materials.
- Oversees accounts payables, payroll, and other financial functions for the Library.
- Ensures financial activities comply with Town policies and procedures, as well as applicable state and federal laws, and terms of contracts.
- Develops and implements a balanced plan of Library services including Library programs, policies, and procedures.
- Furnishes professional advice and recommendations for improvement and expansion of Library services.
- Identifies and develops partnerships with other municipal departments and the school district
- Promotes and publicizes Library activities through a high level of visibility and accessibility.
- Recommends and administers policies on the purchasing of Library materials and services in accordance with Town, state, and federal laws and policies.
- Recommends and administers cataloging and processing of Library materials and maintenance of the Library collections in accordance with American Library Association and other industry standards, and in accordance with Merrimack Valley Library Consortium policies.
• Responsible for the care and upkeep of the Library building and grounds in accordance with the Library Board of Trustees and Town Facilities Manager.
- Plans and administers technology equipment and software needs of both Library staff and public users, in accordance with the Town Information Technology Department and the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium.
- Works closely with the Library Board of Trustees and various library committees; attends meetings.
- Participates as a voting member of the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium governing membership.
- Works closely with the Friends of the Stevens Memorial Library, the private 501(c) organization, whose charter is support and fundraising for the Library and provides recommendations in the preparation of their annual budget.
- Works closely with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (M.B.L.C.) agency and prepares and submits annual compliance reports.
- Recommends use and administers State Aid to Public Library funds awarded to the Library.
- Keeps abreast of state and national trends in demographics, economics, technology, and other areas influencing ever-evolving Library services and operations.
- Maintains affiliation with local, state, and national professional library organizations.
- Provides effective and efficient customer services and promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
- Follows safe work practices.

Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):
Graduation from an American Library Association (A.L.A.) accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Library Administration, Library Science, Business Administration or Library Technology; supplemented by 7 - 10 years of experience in library management, library administration, public administration, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge of: Computerized integrated library systems; General Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations, American's with Disabilities Act laws, and applicable state and local building codes; Recent developments, current literature, and sources of information on municipal library administration and operations; Internet operations and the provision of content and access to internet users; Networking technologies and products related to library operations; Security and related issues dealing with public access to a variety of technologies; Public library administration and operations including management, budgeting, programming, and customer service; M.B.L.C. state finance reports; The use of standard office equipment including computers and relevant software programs.

Ability to: Analyze professional and technical problems and arrive at effective, workable, and timely solutions; Plan and coordinate the activities and equipment used in the municipal library; Analyze problems, identify, and plan for alternative solutions, and implement plans; Multi-task and prioritize work; Train and provide mentoring to staff; Maintain confidentiality; Assign and supervise the work of others; motivate employees to work toward common goals; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, elected officials, residents, and members of the general public.

Children's Librarian (full-time), Stevens Memorial Library, North Andover, Massachusetts

GENERAL PURPOSE 
This position performs a variety of patron services, with special focus on services for children and their parents, caregivers, and teachers. Work is distinguished by the ability to maintain a broad knowledge of children's literature and to help educate caregivers and teachers about reading processes to support children's literacy development.

Required Education, Training, and Experience:

• Current principles and practices of public library service including, knowledge of reference and information resources, search techniques using print and electronic resources, reader advisory services, and collection management practices. 
• Childhood development and literacy development. 
• Automated library systems and programs and other office applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications. 

Ability to: 
• Maintain a high degree of flexibility and ability to multi-task in order to meet the varying needs of library users. 
• To instruct patrons on the use of print and electronic resources.

Full-time, immediate

Starting pay: $29.62 per hour without a Master's Degree (Grade 3) or

Job Description:

General Statement of Duties:

The Public Services Assistant is responsible for the operation and supervision of the Access Services Department when assigned an evening or weekend shift. Tasks include managing the circulation desk, supervising student employees, stacks maintenance, processing interlibrary loan requests, and other projects as assigned.

Supervision Received:

This position reports to the Head of Access Services and will receive direction from full-time Access Services Library Assistants. This position works under the overall direction of the Library Dean.

Supervision Exercised:

Functional supervision of part-time student employees

Detailed Statement of Duties:

Supervise and work at the circulation desk performing general circulation functions such as checking in and out library items, training and supervising students, explaining policies, and processing fines/fees.
Assist with monitoring the department's email accounts.
Assist with supervising, scheduling, and monitoring the library's study rooms.
Search and retrieve requested items from the library's collections.
Assist with scanning books and journals for interlibrary loan and document delivery.
Gather statistics and perform data entry. 
Assist patrons with using the course reserve and interlibrary loan and document delivery systems.
Assist with stacks maintenance including shelving and shelf-reading, training and supervising student assistants, and shifting collections.
Responsible for assisting students with library equipment, i.e., troubleshooting, ensuring printers are equipped with paper, and submitting I.T. work orders for equipment repairs.
Performs regular rounds of the library to monitor the safety and security of patrons, library collections, and the building. Submitting work orders for building and or other facilities issues as they arise.
When scheduled on a weekend, evening, morning or holiday, responsible for opening and closing and securing the library with support from public safety personnel in the evenings.
Assists in the planning and preparation of Library exhibits, displays and student support activities. 
Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience in a customer service environment, could include phone, e-mail, chat and face-to-face interaction.
Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, students, faculty, and other library users. 
Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
Ability to effectively assist a diverse student body, and effectively understand and adapt to cultural differences. 
Ability to organize work, to assess priorities, and to work independently.
Ability to acquire knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in academic library work.
Knowledge of Google Suite or Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint (or similar software). 
Preferred Qualifications:

Bilingual (Spanish or Portuguese speaking preferred).
Experience working in a library.
Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of supervision.
Supervisory experience, including hiring, training, scheduling and evaluations.
Demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed precision work.

The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (M.B.L.C.) seeks an experienced library professional to join our agency as the Head of Library Advisory and Development. This is an opportunity to be part of a talented and dynamic team of professionals who support library services across the Commonwealth.

This position reports to the Director of the Board of Library Commissioners, supervises a team of Library and Advisory Development staff and consultants, and oversees the M.B.L.C.’s federal Library Services and Technology Act (L.S.T.A.) program. The Head of Library Advisory and Development is a member of the agency’s management team, provides advisory services to public library directors, trustees, and friends, guides the provision of services to special populations, and guides the provision of preservation and disaster recovery services to libraries.

We’re looking for someone who is a flexible, forward-focused leader and an experienced and collaborative-minded manager who can thrive in an environment of change. The successful candidate will be able to direct a strong, cohesive team, communicate clearly and effectively; and skillfully organize and manage multiple simultaneous projects with competing deadlines. 

This is a hybrid role, with partial in-office and partial work from home time.

Qualifications:

Applicant must have at least:

a) five years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in library administration

b) of which at least three years must have been in a managerial or supervisory capacity; or

c) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below: 

I.    A Master’s degree with a major in Library Science may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (a) experience.*
II.   A completed Doctorate or course work completed and a dissertation in progress with a major in library science, public administration, or a related discipline may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (a) experience.

    *Education toward a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of two years of the required (a) experience. No substitutions will be permitted for the required (b) experience.

Salary Range: $85,967 - $132,295

Library Assistant Substitute, Borrower Services, Chelmsford Public Library, Chelmsford, Massachusetts

The Chelmsford Public Library is looking for qualified applicants to join our team as a substitute Library Assistant for the Borrower Services Department. 

Looking for people to provide positive, courteous service to the public in a team-oriented environment to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. Working at the Borrower Services desk means checking materials in and out to patrons, organizing patron reserves, answering the telephone and directing calls, and registering new borrowers. You may also assist patrons with the copier, assist patrons in locating materials, answer patron questions, and reserve and distribute museum passes using online software while maintaining the highest level of patron confidentiality. You will help maintain proper order in the collection by reading shelves, as well doing other duties as requested. 

This is not a remote position.

Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):
Candidates for this substitute position must have library circulation experience. A four-year college degree is preferred, and familiarity with SirsiDynix Symphony Integrated Library System is a plus. Candidates must be able to adapt smoothly to patron demands and should enjoy interacting with people of all ages. 

Physical requirements: You must be able to lift 35 pounds with or without assistance, push a cart full of library materials, and bend, reach and stand for extended periods of time.

Head of Youth Services, Nevins Library, Methuen, MA

The Nevins Library is seeking to fill a Full Time Head of Youth Services Position beginning in April 2026. The Nevins Library is a private non-profit organization that serves as the public library for the City of Methuen, a diverse community of 53,000. The library is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, detail-oriented, compassionate leader to oversee a team of 7 staff. The Head of Youth Services supervises all aspects of service to youth ages 0-18, their families and caregivers. This includes Youth Services staff scheduling, materials selection, program development, outreach, and building community partnerships. This position works closely with the Library Leadership Team, and can have supervisory responsibility for the building, staff and patron safety, as scheduled and as needed. This position reports to the Library Director.

Qualifications

• A minimum of 3 years of appropriate public library experience serving a diverse, evolving community – Children’s or Youth services preferred
• Flexible, self-motivated individual with technology, budgeting, grant writing, and collection development experience
• Strong team player and problem-solver with significant leadership skills
• Ability to work within the framework of Library policies and practices to provide excellent customer service

This position reports to the Head of Access Services and will receive direction from full-time Access Services Library Assistants. This position works under the overall direction of the Library Dean.

Supervision Exercised:
Functional supervision of part-time student employees

Detailed Statement of Duties:
Supervise and work at the circulation desk performing general circulation functions such as checking in and out library items, training and supervising students, explaining policies, and processing fines/fees.
Assist with monitoring the department's email accounts.
Assist with supervising, scheduling, and monitoring the library's study rooms.
Search and retrieve requested items from the library's collections.
Assist with scanning books and journals for interlibrary loan and document delivery.
Gather statistics and perform data entry.
Assist patrons with using the course reserve and interlibrary loan and document delivery systems.
Assist with stacks maintenance including shelving and shelf-reading, training and supervising student assistants, and shifting collections.
Responsible for assisting students with library equipment, i.e., troubleshooting, ensuring printers are equipped with paper, and submitting IT work orders for equipment repairs.
Performs regular rounds of the library to monitor the safety and security of patrons, library collections, and the building. Submitting work orders for building and or other facilities issues as they arise.
When scheduled on a weekend, evening, morning or holiday, responsible for opening and closing and securing the library with support from public safety personnel in the evenings.
Assists in the planning and preparation of Library exhibits, displays and student support activities.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience in a customer service environment, could include phone, e-mail, chat and face-to-face interaction.
Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, students, faculty, and other library users.
Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to effectively assist a diverse student body, and effectively understand and adapt to cultural differences.
Ability to organize work, to assess priorities, and to work independently.
Ability to acquire knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in academic library work.
Knowledge of Google Suite or Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint (or similar software).

Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual (Spanish or Portuguese speaking preferred).
Experience working in a library.
Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of supervision.
Supervisory experience, including hiring, training, scheduling and evaluations.
Demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed precision work.
Experience with an automated library circulation system, preferably ExLibris Alma/Primo.
Knowledge of interlibrary loan and document delivery procedures.
Flexibility to cover other shifts as needed.

Shift: 11.25 hours per week during the academic year

Fall/Spring Semesters hours*:
Available shifts:
Thursday, 6:00-11:45pm
Saturday, 11:45am-5:15pm

Potential shifts:
Sunday, 3:15pm-11:45pm (would act as a substitute for absences of regularly scheduled-staff)
On a limited number of days during final examination periods, hours may extend until 12:15am.
You may be requested to work on select holidays.
You may be requested to work during University closures due to weather/snow.
Additional night and weekend shifts may be available.

Job Description:
The Full-Time Temporary Reference & Research Services Librarian will be the primary reference librarian working with the tenure-track librarians to provide reference and research services to the University community, participate in collection development liaison duties, and participate in related projects during the academic year. The Reference and Research Librarian will also assist in the supervision of student workers in reference/research duties.

Works under the guidance of the MSCA librarians, and is under the administrative supervision of the Library Dean.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Functional supervision of student worker assistants.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate in the Research Help Desk rotation. Answer both ready reference and in-depth reference questions by IM, chat, email, phone and in-person.
Create/revise reference, subject and topic research guides.
Project: Review, update and build out the Research Help Desk's FAQ on LibAnswers (Springshare platform).
Project: Participate in the redesign and conversion of the library's LibGuides (Springshare platform) based on the library's established best practices and the outcomes of a recently completed accessibility review.
Project: Develop and update ready reference video tutorials.

Shared Responsibilities:
Acts as library liaison to selected academic departments for both graduate and undergraduate programs.
Provides collection development duties - evaluation, resource selection, weeding, etc. - in selected subject areas.
Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements:

Required at Hire:
A Masters of Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited program or an equivalent Master's degree, such as a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) or a Master of Library Science and Information Science (MLS/MLIS), with degree awarded before start date.
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Ability to perform the duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI) as well as a completed background check satisfactory to the university.

Experience providing reference and research services in an academic environment.

Supervisor of Circulation, Billerica Public Library, Billerica, MA

 

Job Description: Due to a promotion, the Town of Billerica seeks an innovative and energetic individual to fill the position of Supervisor of Circulation. This highly visible position manages the operations of the Library’s busy Circulation Desk and main floor, including supervising Circulation Assistants and Library Pages, overseeing interlibrary loan services, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality of the patron database, participating in homebound delivery services, and contributing to the Library’s marketing and display activities.

 

Additionally, the Supervisor of Circulation ensures all stacks are well maintained and organized, participates in outreach initiatives, and supports collection development and readers advisory activities. 

 

Schedule: 37.5-hour work week. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, 9am-5pm; Wednesdays, 1pm-9pm; and alternating Fridays and Saturdays, 9am-5pm. One Sunday per month from 1pm-5pm is also required.

 

Qualifications: A Master’s Degree in Library Science in a program accredited by the American Library Association and a minimum of 3 years supervisory and professional experience.

 

Salary Range: $1,329.39 - $1,811.29  / week depending on qualifications. Excellent benefits package, including participation in the retirement system.
