Youth Services Librarian, Hartland Public Library, Hartland, Vermont

Job Description:
Youth Services Librarian
30 Hours per Week (Benefits Eligible)

The Hartland Public Library seeks an innovative, enthusiastic, and community-minded Youth Services Librarian to join our supportive team. You’ll be joining forward-thinking, creative librarians who focus on helping one another to build a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging community library. 

This is a hands-on, community-focused role where you’ll plan educational events, build diverse and engaging book collections, connect with local schools and organizations, and help local youth discover a lifelong love of reading and learning. You’ll foster intellectual curiosity and early literacy for children and youth ages 0–17,  and their caregivers and families. This position reports directly to the Library Director.

What You'll Do
Create Educational, Fun & Engaging Programs
Plan and lead story times, crafts, summer reading activities, school vacation programs, and monthly special events for children, teens, and families
Develop exciting new programs that reflect the interests of the community and follow up-to-date educational trends for children and teens
Help promote events through library newsletters, social media, the library’s website and other news outlets
Help Young Readers Discover Great Books
Recommend books and resources for children, teens, caregivers, homeschoolers, and teachers
Build and maintain a diverse, inclusive, and engaging collection
Create eye-catching displays and welcoming spaces for our young patrons
Connect with the Community
Build partnerships with schools, homeschool groups, childcare providers, the Recreational Center, and Upper Valley community organizations
Visit local schools and community sites to share library services and programs, and conduct outreach
Create within the library, a vibrant hub for Upper Valley families
Supervise youth volunteers
Support Daily Library Services for All
Work at the circulation desk – welcome patrons and provide friendly and responsive customer service
Assist patrons with checking materials in and out, and answer reference and technical help questions
Help visitors use digital resources like Libby, Kanopy, and our other online resources
Attend library trainings, and professional development opportunities
Be Part of a Collaborative Team
Work closely with the Library Director and staff to develop Youth Services goals
Brainstorm with staff on how to make behind-the-scenes operations more efficient
Participate in staff development days and special projects that involve all staff, and attend monthly staff meetings

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Library & Information Science (M.L.I.S.) is preferred
OR
Bachelor’s degree with library management experience, plus the willingness to earn a Vermont Certificate of Public Librarianship within two years

Knowledge of children’s literature, early literacy practices, and youth development 
Experience in collection development and budgeting 
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Pay & Benefits

This position is 30 hours per week, with two rotating Saturdays per month. The schedule for this position is Tuesday – Thursday, 10:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. and Fridays, 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. 2 Rotating Saturdays, 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. (Each time a Saturday is worked, you get the following Friday off.) Occasional evenings or extra weekend coverage required for special events.

The hourly pay rate is $25.50 – $27.50/per hour, depending on experience and credentials. This 30-hour full-time position includes the following benefits:

Youth Services Librarian, Norwich Public Library, Norwich, VT

The Norwich Public Library seeks a creative, energetic, and community-oriented Youth Services Librarian. This full-time position plays a vital role in promoting early literacy and lifelong learning by providing inclusive, engaging library services and programming for children ages 0–14 and their caregivers, educators, and families. 

Key Responsibilities:
Foster a welcoming, safe, and inclusive space for youth and their families

Circulation Services Coordinator, Norwich Public Library, Norwich, VT

 The Fairlee Public Library, located in Fairlee, VT, is a community hub: we provide a welcoming, supportive, and pleasant place for staff, volunteers and our patrons to work, connect, learn, browse and meet. The Library is overseen by a Board of five elected Trustees, and is a department within the Town of Fairlee municipal government. The Opportunity

 

Manchester Community Library seeks a passionate leader, advocate, and fundraiser to inspire the next chapter of MCL’s impact and sustainability.

 

The Executive Director will be responsible for strategic oversight of the library, including developing and executing a strategic plan, designing and implementing all fundraising and development activities, supervising staff, and working collaboratively with the Board of Trustees to ensure the organization's financial integrity and accountability.

Youth Services/Media Librarian, Norman Williams Public Library, Woodstock, VT

Circulation Services Coordinator, Hartland Public Library, Hartland, Vermont

 

Part-time, on-site, 20-25 hours per week with one-to-two rotating Saturdays per month.

 

Job Summary:

 

Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Circulation Services Coordinator will support the mission of the library by providing excellent library service to patrons of the Hartland community. The person we are seeking is dynamic, friendly, and focused. This role is patron and customer service-focused, with an emphasis on circulation duties and projects that support library operations. The ability to multitask while maintaining a friendly attitude is essential. The Circulation Services Coordinator is part of a collaborative, engaged, busy, positive and

forward-thinking team.

 

Responsibilities:

 

             Be a warm and welcoming presence at the circulation desk.

             Manage the circulation desk following the library’s policies and procedures.

             Assist patrons in finding items and answering questions related to the library’s technology platforms; assists with Reader’s Advisory.

             Assist with shelving of items; occasionally working with volunteer shelvers.

             Processes new library accounts and adds patrons to our outreach platforms.

             Works with the Youth Services Librarian to assist with family programming.

             Helps coordinate the library’s Community Room and exhibit spaces.

             Helps create and set up creative monthly book displays.

             Conducts regular shelf-reading and shelf maintenance.

             Ensures all welcome materials are printed and stocked.

             Assists with daily, end-of-the month, and yearly state statistical reporting.

             Assists with late materials processes and communications.

             Support library staff with special projects.

             Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

 

             Previous library experience is desirable.

             Experience with ILS/OPAC platforms – HPL uses Koha and Aspen.

             Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

             Excellent organizational and time management abilities.

             Attention to detail and self-driven focus is a must.

             Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills – in person, on the phone, and in electronic communications.

             Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

             Enthusiastic and positive attitude.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

             Frequently required to see, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, talk and hear.

             Physical dexterity to reach shelves of various heights, push library carts and lift (up to 30 lbs).

             Ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in English.

             Dexterity to perform data entry on a computer, laptop, iPad or other electronic device.

 

Benefits:

 

This position reports to the Library Director. The time commitment for this position is 20-25 hours per week, including one-to-two Saturdays per month. This position is eligible for part-time benefits as part of the Town of Hartland package, including paid holidays, vacation leave, sick leave, and personal leave.

 

This is a non-exempt, hourly position starting at $22.00/hr.
