Branch Manager-Bookmobile and Warehouse, Portland Public Library, Portland, Maine

Portland Public Library is seeking a full-time Bookmobile Manager to lead our mobile library services. Reporting to the Associate Director, this position oversees Bookmobile and Warehouse operations, supervises staff, and delivers high-quality library services throughout Portland neighborhoods. The successful candidate will combine strong public service skills with experience in programming, circulation, collections, community engagement, and staff leadership.

This is an exciting opportunity for a creative and collaborative library professional to help shape the future of services at Portland Public Library. We are seeking someone who can successfully lead existing operations while contributing ideas, planning, and leadership as the library explores new approaches to mobile and community-based service. This is a full-time, non-exempt position scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week. The starting pay range is $27.44-$32.15 per hour, commensurate with experience. Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):
Master of Library Science (M.L.S./M.L.I.S.) degree from an American Library Association accredited institution.
Three (3) years of progressively responsible public library experience.
Experience supervising, training, coaching, and evaluating staff, including responsibility for performance management.
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage library services, collections, programs, and operations.
Strong commitment to customer service and the ability to provide responsive, inclusive service to a diverse community.
Ability to balance individual customer needs with library policies, operational requirements, and organizational priorities.
Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, manage multiple priorities, and remain calm, courteous, and professional in a demanding environment.
Ability to work independently while effectively organizing, prioritizing, and completing multiple assignments.
Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with library staff, administration, community partners, and the public.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, web-based tools, information retrieval resources, and other technology commonly used in public library environments.
Possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the library and its insurance carrier.
Conversational ability in English is required.

Experience with mobile library services, outreach services, community engagement initiatives, or other nontraditional service models.
Experience managing a branch library, department, outreach program, or other public facing service operations.
Experience overseeing vehicle fleets, logistics operations, or warehouse functions. 
Proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English.

Head Librarian, Nathan & Henry B. Cleaves Law Library, Portland, ME

The Nathan & Henry B. Cleaves Law Library, with roots in service to the Maine legal community going back to 1811, seeks a self-directed, public-service-minded professional to serve as its next Head Librarian. As the state’s oldest law library, Cleaves provides access to statutes, case law, secondary sources, legislative history, and other specialized sources of legal information to the legal community and to the public at large. The Library provides essential support services to Maine’s judicial branch, including judges and generations of law clerks, as well as to other new graduates and established members of the bar seeking to understand, argue, and advance the law in Maine.

The Head Librarian operates all aspects of the Library in a direct service capacity. They will be experienced in, and have a love of, legal research and the preservation and promotion of local legal resources. They will be responsible for developing and maintaining the Library’s budget in consultation with the Library’s Board of Directors, and for managing the use and maintenance of the Library’s systems and technologies. The Head Librarian will be a community-oriented individual who appreciates the Library’s special role in the Maine legal community. They will enthusiastically engage with stakeholders, including the public, Library members, state and county officials, and the Maine State Judicial Branch, to enhance the Library’s offerings and perpetuate its mission. 

This is a full-time position based in Portland, Maine. Portland is a beautiful city on the ocean that offers a variety of arts and cultural, recreational, and educational opportunities in a diverse and growing community.

Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):
The ideal candidate will have a Juris Doctor or a Master of Library Science or both, along with at least three years of full-time experience in a professional capacity in a law library.

Benefits:
A negotiable allocation for health benefits will be provided. The Library offers two weeks of accrued paid time off together with all Maine State Court paid holidays.

Hiring Wage Range:
The salary range for this position is $62,000 to $100,000, and is commensurate with the candidate’s experience and capabilities. The Head Librarian will have flexibility in working between 32-40 hours per week; this will also factor into salary determination.
