Technical Services Division Head, Haverhill Public Library, Haverhill, Massachusetts

*This job will be available due to a retirement*

Job Summary

Performs all duties related to the processing of library materials as needed including: labeling, stamping, covering, and any other handling required. Knowledge and experience with RDA, Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and MARC format to catalog a variety of materials. Will work regular shifts at the circulation desk and should be comfortable with the circulation of library materials including checkouts, check-ins, renewals, patron registration, reserves, and collection of fines and fees. May be asked to fill in at the Youth Services or Circulation desks. Represents the library in a pleasant and helpful manner in all aspects of work.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the supervision of the Assistant Director, ultimately reports to the Director.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Supervises Tech Services assistants and volunteers, with guidance from Assistant Director. May be asked to serve as manager in absence of a Department Head.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Processes materials

2. Oversees iPage/online ordering system

3. Process mail distribution

4. Orders supplies

5. Stays up to date on industry standards and changes; participates in Merrimack Valley Library Consortium committee meetings

6. Provides timely feedback to Assistant Director and Director on anything related to Tech Services, including iPage/ordering/processing/budget; alerts admin to problems

7. Assists other staff members in tech services related tasks, troubleshoots

8. Oversees the smooth operation of the Tech Services department and all related processes, while reporting directly to admin

9. Regularly deals with vendors and relevant Merrimack Valley Library Consortium staff members

10. Recommends products and services to admin

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to bend and stoop; stand and walk on a frequent basis; lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds; must be able to effectively communicate with the public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors Degree required, Masters of Library Science degree preferred

Previous library experience, 1-3 years

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND DESIRABLE ABILITIES:

1. Ability to meet people easily and get along well with others.

2. Ability to express oneself clearly, concisely and pleasantly in the English language both orally, in person and over the phone, and in writing.

3. Ability to handle minute detail and repetitive tasks.

4. Accurate typing and word processing skills.

5. Ability to learn new skills quickly.

6. Ability to handle situations with tact, courtesy, initiative, resourcefulness, good judgment and punctuality.

7. Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.

8. Ability to work quickly and efficiently, meet deadlines, and stay organized.

SCHEDULE


40 hours per week, will include evenings and rotating weekends.

Hiring Wage Range:
$995.24-$1,188.72 per week, hiring level depends on qualifications. Increases according to union contract.

Other Considerations/Requirements:

Undergraduate degree required, Graduate degree strongly preferred
Knowledge of Spanish is a plus

Circulation Technical Assistant, Haverhill Public Library, Haverhill, MA

 

JOB SUMMARY: 

Performs all duties related to the circulation of library materials including checkouts, checkins, renewals, patron registration, reserves, and collection of fines and fees at the Circulation desk. Will occasionally be asked to fill in at Youth Services; will have some regular collection development responsibilities. Represents the library in a pleasant and helpful manner in all aspects of work. 40 hours per week, one night shift per week, one Saturday in three.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the supervision of the Circulation Department Head, with additional guidance from Administrative staff.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Provides limited direction to the page staff.

Qualifications

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides library patrons with the service and attention they require in a pleasant and helpful manner. Refers patron to the staff person best able to help.

2. Checks library materials in and out. Checks condition of materials and routes to appropriate departments for further evaluation if necessary.

3. Collects fines and fees on library materials.

4. Resolves bills and other delinquencies for the patron.

5. Processes reserve materials and notifies patron when materials are ready.

6. Registers new patrons and introduces the new patron to the library services offered. Enters patron information into the database.

7. Maintains Museum Pass and Meeting Room bookings.

8. Performs basic Reader’s Advisory service by helping patrons select fiction, stocking and merchandising the new book and staff recommends shelves. Participates in formulating special display areas.

9. Opens and closes the Main Desk area and/or Youth Services desk, including managing the cash register, emptying the book drop, and ensuring that the area is neat and ready for the day.

10. Handles telephone calls appropriate to the department and routes other calls if necessary.

11. Checks in and processes the delivery.

12. Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors Degree, Coursework towards or a MLS will be given strong value

  • The development of online research guides.
  • Provide access services support using Koha ILS.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library and information science (current MLIS students and recent graduates welcome to apply).
  • At least 2 years of related library experience associated with information literacy instruction and research support.
