 Job Description:  Library Assistant – Youth Services Librarian  
Reports to:   Director of Gordon-Nash Library at New Hampton School
Classification: Part-Time, 12-month, Hourly

Job Summary:
 

The Gordon-Nash Library at New Hampton School Youth Services Librarian plans and conducts the children’s programs and assists with other library functions under the supervision of the Library Director.    

Job Duties (but are not limited to): 


• Plans and conducts preschool story hour on a weekly basis.  
• Plans and conducts a summer reading program for children ages preschool through teens.  • Plans and conducts a book discussion group for interested children.  
• Communicates with home schoolers, teachers, students, parents and community members to help improve library services.  
• Provides attractive displays and settings to encourage reading and play time.  
• Plans and conducts occasional special programs after school or around holidays.
• Assists young adults and community members in finding reading material and information, and in using library services and facilities.
• Provides individual instruction in the use of library services, including use of automated systems, reference sources and other resources for research and study projects.
• Assists in book selection of children’s materials, and inventory management of children’s collection.  
• Reads and responds to correspondence and email pertaining to youth services.  
• Compiles statistics on attendance of all children’s programs throughout the year.
• Works at the circulation desk as needed. Checks library material in and out. Shelves library material.  
• Performs related tasks as assigned.
• Works closely with Library Director in planning programs and maintains an effective working relationship with fellow staff members. Has a cooperative team spirit. 

Qualifications:

 
• Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis on children’s literature and services.  
• Experience in a children's or young adult library unit or school library.
• Automated systems experience.
• Successfully complete a driving record check and criminal background check.   

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Strong ability to relate to and communicate with children and young adults and the school and Town community.
• Thorough knowledge of youth and young adult literature, library reference methods and procedures.
• Ability to maintain accurate files and records; ability to use automated systems.   
• Initiative, creativity, flexibility, resourcefulness and good judgment as well as writing and communication skills.
• Ability to express oneself orally and in writing.
• Flexibility, initiative, energy, patience and tact to deal effectively with the community.
• Genuine respect for children and young adults and an ability to establish rapport with them.
• Light physical effort required in carrying and shelving books, and in performing other typical library functions, including the ability to lift 25 pounds.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching and climbing.
• Frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
• Has access to a limited amount of confidential information.

 Job Parameters: 

The Library Assistant – Youth Services Librarian position is a part-time hourly position, including evenings and weekends, not to exceed 20 hours a week.  This position is not eligible for benefits.
