ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may
be assigned.
Under the direction of the Library Director:
Performs administrative and supervisory work in assisting in the operation of the Library.
Assists the Library Director in administrative, professional, and supervisory duties.
As Head of Adult Services, supervises Reference Department.
Assists in all phases of collection development as assigned by the Director.
Assists the Library Director in the supervision of all departments of the library and keeps the Library Director informed about scheduling problems and staffing needs; Assists with staff development and training programs.
Keeps up to date on new trends in public services and provides leadership in their
implementation.
Provides back-up support at public service desks as needed.
Represents the Library to the public, especially when dealing with public service issues; May include attendance at community meetings and events.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):
MLS from an ALA accredited library school required; plus (5) years’ experience in adult
services in a public library, including (3) years of supervisory work with increasing
responsibility and (l) year of administration experience.
Commitment to public service in a large, urban library; experience in community outreach
programs and public relations preferred; demonstrated attention to detail. Must possess valid driver's license (or be able to obtain one) with an acceptable driving history. The Assistant Director must have a good knowledge of all aspects of public library service.
Demonstrated ability to supervise staff at all levels; ability to communicate and work effectively and tactfully with employees and the public, to create a positive workplace environment and to present a positive public image; ability to work in a team environment; good professional judgement.

Hiring Wage Range:
$35.7973 (min) to $39.7047 (max per hour) - 35 hours. Additional masters' incentive of $2,000 will be added annually.
