The Howe Library in Hanover, NH is looking for a part-time Youth Services Library Assistant to join our team. If you enjoy working with youth and families in a busy library, consider working at the Howe. Under the supervision of the Youth Services Manager, this position is responsible for planning and conducting programs for young children, staffing the children's area, and assisting library users. This is a 25-hour part-time position and will include working some evenings and weekends.
Job Summary
This position is responsible for preparing and conducting programs for children, staffing the children's room, and assisting patrons.
Major Job Duties
Prepares and conducts children's programs and story-times, performances, and summer activities.
Recommends books and materials to children, young adults and adults.
Assists patrons in locating and selecting materials.
Performs publicity and community outreach activities.
Creates displays; assists in maintaining a clean and neat library environment.
Creates a variety of graphic and written materials.
Attends meetings as required.
Assists patrons at the circulation desk as needed or assigned; checks materials in and out; collects fines; issues library membership cards.
Reads reviews and suggests possible purchases to the Youth Services Librarian(s).
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge and level of competency typically associated with specialized training and education related to the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
One to two years of work relevant work experience. OR
The equivalent combination of training, education and experience sufficient to understand and successfully perform all major job duties.
Knowledge and Skills Required
Knowledge of the library's public service commitment.
Knowledge of Dewey Decimal classification systems.
Knowledge library policies and procedures.
Knowledge of books and materials for children and young adults.
Knowledge of the library computer system.
Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
Skill in preparing and conducting programs.
Skill in delivering effective, friendly, and respectful customer service to library patrons.
Ability to build and maintain constructive and collegial work relationships with other employees in a team-oriented environment.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
The work is typically performed indoors and in a library setting, while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, walking, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.
