Dartmouth Libraries is undertaking a year-long collection management project involving the identification, retrieval, and processing of volumes for deaccession and relocation. They are seeking a temporary staff member to assist in this project.
This position requires attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work efficiently in a physical, hands-on environment.
Staff will collaborate with Dartmouth librarians across technical service units and will be required to retrieve titles from library shelving based on Dartmouth-supplied pick lists. They will then double-check each item retrieved against a pick list to confirm call number and title match. They will be expected to flag and document misclassified items and other inconsistencies. Once the items have been confirmed for deaccessioning, the staff will be required to get them ready for donation or recycling and remove them from the premises in conjunction with Dartmouth facilities staff. Staff will also be required to provide monthly statistics reports about the number of titles processed, number of discrepancies and problems identified and the number of items identified for donation. This work will take place within Dartmouth’s Collection Management and Preservation department.
Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience working in a library environment.
Functional knowledge of the Library of Congress Classification system.
A high attention to detail.
Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately and efficiently.
Reliable transportation.
Ability to learn new tasks quickly.
The ability to lift up 50 lbs throughout the day.
The ability to communicate in a professional and timely manner.
