Assistant Director, Chelmsford Public Library, Chelmsford (MA)

Assistant Director, Chelmsford Public Library (Chelmsford)

We have an opening for Assistant Director at the Chelmsford Library. Filling this position will be challenging as we’re looking to replace our Swiss Army Librarian. We need an Assistant Director who is a great problem-solver, using ingenuity, skill and yes… sometimes tools from their trusty Swiss army knife to get things done. Need someone to build a hot air balloon for a Wizard of Oz celebration, check! Need someone to act as point person on a comprehensive web page design, no problem. Work with the town clerk to re-organize files, sure! Drive to NY State to pick up a mobile pop-up library? Why not? Is this person you?

Strategic planning, reopening guidelines, and big picture ideas – we need someone always thinking. No project is too small or too unusual to tackle. We need someone who works well with their colleagues and the public. We want someone who thrives on new challenges and thinks “Library” beyond the 9-5 work day. We’re looking for someone who is able to shift gears at any moment, filling in at a desk, picking up a co-worker’s responsibilities when needed, taking on a new role, talented enough to take on most anything – a Renaissance librarian.

We would love someone who has experience working with community partners, Friends of the Library and volunteers. We would like a well-read candidate who enjoys the minutiae of comprehensive collection development and enjoys mentoring other librarians. And we also need someone organized, super smart and up-to-speed on current library trends who has a great track record managing staff. In short, we want it all.

Qualifications:  MLS (Master of Library Science) or MLIS (Master of Library Information Science) from an American Library Association accredited library school. Three to five years of library management experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills; listening and interpersonal skills; organizational skills; public speaking skills.  Sense of humor is a must. Baking skills are always appreciated. Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop, Canva, a variety of ILS software – please share your technology comfort level with us.
