Head of Youth Services, Haverhill Public Library, Haverhill, MA

 

Job Summary

Responsible for the operation of all aspects of the Youth Services Department of a busy public library, including staff supervision, collection development, programming, and budget oversight.  In coordination with the Management Team, plans and manages technology upgrades and policies, including the introduction of new procedures.

Supervises professional and support staff in the Youth Services Department; oversees volunteers and pages assigned to the department; acts as de facto manager in absence of director and assistant director, supervises all subordinate staff when appropriate

Qualifications

7.       Ability to work with MS Office products, both for internal library use and for patron instruction

10.   Ability to work cooperatively as a team member

11.   Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

12.   Ability to use, or quickly learn, ILS (Symphony) and facilitate staff and public use of the ILS/catalog

Minimum Qualifications

1.       Master of Library Science Degree from an ALA-accredited institution, will consider ongoing work towards a graduate degree and combined experience

2.       Three to five years experience in a public library administrative position, preferably Youth Services, managing both MLS and paraprofessional staff

3.       Demonstrated facility and experience with the Internet, electronic databases, Microsoft Office products, and integrated library systems

4.       Demonstrated facility and/or experience working with the public in a diverse urban environment

5.       Working knowledge of Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole is a plus

Library Page (16-hours), Billerica Public Library, Billerica, MA

 

The Town of Billerica seeks a friendly, dependable, independent, and detail-oriented candidate to serve as a library page. Library pages play a key role in keeping the library’s collections organized and discoverable and assist with item retrieval.

 

Primary tasks include:

- Shelving books and non-print items according to the Dewey Decimal system
- Retrieving items for interlibrary loan
- Checking shelves for items presumed lost or missing
- Shelf reading assigned collection areas
- Keeping shelves and collections neat and clean
- Assisting with opening or closing the building
 

Schedule: Schedule will include days, evenings, and weekends, with the preferred schedule being Mondays 5pm-9pm, Wednesdays 5pm-9pm, Fridays 1pm-5pm, and Saturdays 1pm-5pm. Saturday hours vary in the summer. Actual schedule is negotiable. Additional hours may occasionally be available. 

 

Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or older. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of being able to work independently and experience demonstrating attention to detail. Must also enjoy working with the public.

 

Salary: $15.40/hour; This position is eligible for pro-rated paid time off.

Library Assistant/Librarian I, Youth Services, Nevins Library, Methuen, MA

 Plan and execute developmentally appropriate programming for: preschool-aged children (infant-5 years old), school-aged children (K to 6th grade) and teenagers (6-12th grade).

  •  Perform the routine procedures needed to open and close the Children’s Room.
  •  Provide reference service and reader’s advisory service at the Youth Services Desk, using the Internet, inhouse materials, and state-provided databases. Training will be provided.
  •  Assist patrons with the use of the online catalog, library databases, general computer use and printing tasks.
  •  Sort book carts and shelve books when needed. Participate in shelf reading all sections of Youth Services.
  •  Perform some library circulation duties: issue library cards; place patron requests for library materials within the MVLC network; check in, check out, and renew in-house programming material; accept payment to clear debts and charges for lost or damaged Youth Services materials; process hold requests for Youth Services materials.
  •  Maintain displays of Youth Services materials to include e.g., straightening materials on shelves and displaying books on shelves.
  •  Attend department and library staff meetings.
  •  Attend training as required to develop and enhance skills used serving Youth and Families.
  •  Create booklists on all types of Children’s materials in our collection as requested by the Head of Youth Services.
  •  Perform other duties as designated by the Head of Youth Services. 

 

    Bachelor’s Degree required, current MLIS students are encouraged to apply.
 

•    At least three (3) years’ experience working with preschool and/or elementary children in a library or school setting.
 

•    Able to work with a diverse population, while respecting people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds.
 

•    Committed to excellent customer service, with the ability to multi-task and maintain composure in a busy environment.
 

•    Familiarity with working in a technology-oriented environment.
 

•    Strong teamwork, excellent written and oral communication skills.
 

•    Proficiency in a second language (especially Spanish) is preferred.

 

$21.00-$24.00 per hour, salary and job title commensurate with experience and education.

Library Assistant I (Part Time), Amherst Town Library, Amherst, NH
