Youth Services Library Assistant, Lebanon Public Libraries, Lebanon, NH

The Youth Services Library Assistant is responsible for providing children's programs, services, and information to children, their caregivers, and other library patrons; providing instruction and access to materials; purchasing print and non-print materials for the children's collection; general reference and circulation services.

Essential Functions:
● -Answer telephones; greet patrons and answer patron inquiries.
● -Receive and distribute mail and materials as required.
● -Perform general circulation program functions, such as registering new patrons; filling out patron requests and searching the database for requested materials; reserving and holding materials for patrons; receiving materials; and notifying patrons that requested materials are being held on reserve.
● -Assist patrons with computer questions or make referrals for complex requests.
● -Assist patrons in the use of Library machines and personal devices.
● -Under the direction of the Youth Services Librarian, selects, evaluates, and maintains materials in the children’s and teen collections.
● -Shelve books and other materials; prepare new materials for shelving; file materials as necessary.
● -Provide mentorship and guidance to library volunteers and interns assisting with youth programs and services.
● -Collaborate with other library staff members to develop and implement cross-departmental programs and initiatives.
● -Develop, publicize, present, and evaluate engaging library programs and services for teens, children and their caregivers both independently and collaboratively, taking into consideration principles of youth development; community assets; and the diverse educational, recreational, and personal needs of local youth.
● -Inventory Library supplies and place orders as necessary.
● -Assist with cataloging as required.
● -Work regular shifts at public desks and assist with coverage as necessary.
● -Attend meetings and trainings as required.
● -Stay abreast of current trends and best practices in library services and programming, continuously seeking opportunities for professional development and growth.
● -Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates or as may be assigned by the Library Director and/or librarians.
● -Serve as a resource and advocate for youth literacy, providing guidance and support to parents, caregivers, and educators on fostering literacy skills in children and teens.
● -Develop, publicize, present, and evaluate engaging library programs and services for teens, children and their caregivers both independently and collaboratively, taking into consideration principles of youth development; community assets; and the diverse educational, recreational, and personal needs of local youth.
● -Selects, evaluates, and maintains materials in the library's collection.
● -Collaborate with librarians in developing and delivering programming to children, teens, and adults; assist with publicizing programs as required.
● -Assists with outreach efforts to schools, daycare centers, and community organizations to promote library services and programs for youth.
● -Serve as a resource and advocate for youth literacy, providing guidance and support to parents, caregivers, and educators on fostering literacy skills in children and teens.
● -Conduct comprehensive reference work at the public desk, including researching diverse topics, assisting with database navigation, and addressing patron inquiries.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience:
● -High school diploma required; Associate’s degree or relevant experience preferred.
● -One to three years of experience in a public library setting is preferred.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:
● -Knowledge of standard library practices; computer and Internet skills required.
● -Excellent verbal, written and customer service skills.
● -Excellent organizational skills; accuracy; and attention to detail.
● -Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced work environment; to prioritize and balance competing needs; and to apply sound judgment, sensitivity and diplomacy in addressing patron needs.
● -Ability to deal with challenging individuals and situations with professionalism and sensitivity.
● -Excellent technology skills, including the use of word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
● -Knowledge of library and online resources and knowledge of Library holdings.
● -Ability to stay current on evolving technology, collection development, programming and educational trends in the library profession.

Hiring Wage Range:
$23.64-$31.91 per hour

Other Considerations/Requirements:
This position is 25 hours over a 4 day work schedule with Saturday hours included as part of a rotation (every 4-5 weeks), and at least one evening a week until 6pm is required.
