JOB DESCRIPTION: LIBRARY AIDE (PART-TIME)
Library Aides perform clerical tasks in the Library and are supervised by the Library Director. Library Aides must have a sincere interest in literacy, books and related materials, and the mission of libraries. They must have excellent customer service skills. Also, Library Aides need working knowledge of technology, including computers and various computer applications, and have a familiarity with data bases and the willingness to learn and work with specific library data bases. They must be knowledgeable about social media. They must also learn and understand privacy laws and regulations, as they apply to libraries and the information that is entrusted to them.
Responsibilities:
1. Carries out duties as assigned by the Library Director.
2. Staffs the Circulation Desk and performs the duties associated with it, including:
a. Checking books out for patrons;
b. Checking books in and ensuring they are in good condition;
c. Activating the computer system(s) and data base(s); i. Helping patrons with internet devices i.e., computers, I-Pads, tablets for downloading books, etc.
d. Updating patron and circulation data base(s), including entering and deleting information, as appropriate;
e. Answering the phones;
f. Managing the reserve/request list; g. Issuing and renewing patron cards; and, h. Managing overdue materials.
3. Prepares, or ensures preparation of, new books and materials for circulation, including cataloging, covering and labeling.
4. Shelves books and materials, and updates the magazine rack, while also reading the shelves.
5. Engages in all aspects of the Inter-Library Loan systems.
6. Keeps the Library neat, organized and efficient.
7. Interacts respectfully and courteously with patrons, other staff, the Director and Trustees.
8. Assists with library displays and activities.
9. Assists patrons with locating books and materials, providing general reference services and answering general reference questions.
10. Leads and/or assists groups with ties to the Library and its mission, as determined by the Library Director.
Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):
High school diploma or equivalent required
At least one year of library, clerical, or public-facing experience preferred
Comfortable working with people of all ages, including children
Detail-oriented, organized, and able to follow written and verbal instructions
Strong teamwork skills with the ability to work independently when needed
Willingness to learn the Dewey Decimal System, library circulation policies, and automated library systems
Ability to manage multiple tasks and assist several patrons at once in a busy environment
Basic typing and computer skills required; comfortable using current technology
Experience with Canva or similar design tools preferred
Friendly, approachable, and committed to providing excellent customer service
Willing to assist with Summer Reading programs for children and youth during the summer months
Must pass a Department of Safety background check
Benefits:
A new employee is entitled to 1 week of annual leave but must first complete their initial probationary period.
Employees who have begun their 2nd through 7th years of employment are entitled to 2 weeks of annual leave per year.
Employees who have begun their 8th year of employment are entitled to 3 weeks of annual leave that year and each year thereafter.
An employee entitled to 2 weeks or more of vacation leave may request to take more than one week of vacation at a time, but this will be at the Director’s discretion, based on the operational needs of the Library.
Hiring Wage Range:
$13-$14 range with a raise after six month review
