The Peterborough Town Library is seeking a friendly and welcoming library assistant to join our tech services team to oversee our interlibrary loan program. The ideal candidate will enjoy research, detail-oriented task management and have excellent communication skills. Responsibilities include requesting and lending items via the New Hampshire State Interlibrary Loan System, managing book club material requests, as well as regularly serving on the Help Desk. The right candidate will be able to comfortably multitask while maintaining strong attention to detail. Library experience is preferred.
Peterborough Town Library enjoys an average of two hundred visits per day. In 2025, we borrowed 1,679 items through interlibrary loan and lent out another 962 items to libraries in New Hampshire.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Manages all interlibrary loan functions for the library including filling patron requests via the N.H.A.I.S. Interlibrary Loan system, our University and College partners, and other online resources.
• Provides research assistance to find alternative sources when an interlibrary loan cannot be procured.
• Manages book requests for PTL book clubs on a monthly schedule.
• Manages our lifecare facility book club request program.
• Communicates with ordering librarians to recommend collection development in areas not currently meeting patron needs.
• Interacts with library patrons of all ages, answers phone, assists patrons and callers with routine questions and directs them to appropriate departments or staff. Explains routine library policies.
• Processes new library cards, library checkouts, renewals, returns, holds and registrations, utilizing the integrated library system.
• Provides quality customer service to patrons and helps with basic reference, reader’s advisory, program recommendations, and community connections.
• Participates in promoting all library events and services by actively engaging with patrons and referring them to our printed and online resources.
• Assists with opening and closing procedures and tasks. Ensures all safety procedures are followed and the building is secure.
• Maintains interlibrary loan statistics.
Minimum requirements (training, skills, education, experience):

Ability to work independently while maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of staff in the library system.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records.
Knowledge of library operations, policies and procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, to establish positive public relations for the library, and to interact effectively with a wide variety of people.
Considerable ability to pay attention to detail. Knowledge of standard library procedures, current information technology, Internet and database search capabilities.
Highly motivated, creative and flexible with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently. Must enjoy working on multiple projects within all library departments
Required Education & Experience:
Duties require great customer service skills, in addition to knowledge of working with the public and clerical experience equivalent to completion of high school diploma with additional courses in library science and six months to one year of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be proficient in the use of the computer, especially with Microsoft Office Suite and Integrated Library systems.
