This position is responsible for all operations associated with all circulation services related to the operation of the library. It requires extensive knowledge of library services, principles, practices, and procedures, including copyright and confidentiality laws. This position requires accuracy, self-direction, and the ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally. Strong customer service skills are essential.
Essential Functions of the Position:
- Supervises circulation staff & pages.
- Supervises the circulation of all library materials obtained from outside sources.
- Maintains and coordinates responsibility for filling all interlibrary requests from requesting libraries as well as local library patrons.
- Maintains interlibrary loan transactions and enforces interlibrary policies (overdue materials, replacements, etc.).
- Supervises and coordinates collection management responsibilities including de-selection process, shelf maintenance, and book displays.
- Coordinates staff to complete weeding and inventory projects.
- Assists Director in collection development process by reading reviews, recommending materials based on ILL requests and knowledge of collection, ordering materials, and promoting the collection.
- Plans and arranges displays and provide readers’ advisory service as requested to stimulate interest in the library and its collections.
- Plans and prepares informational brochures for public distribution.
- Processes and prepares library overdue notices for mailing on a planned, regular basis.
- Staffs the circulation desk, registers borrowers, checks out material to users, returns material from users, assesses, and clears fines and processes holds as requested.
- Assists patrons by analyzing inquiries, providing readers advisory, identifying material, and providing telephone and/or email reference service to respond to specialized patron needs.
- Assists patrons by providing Internet search assistance.
- Provides customer service to resolve patron complaints or problems.
- Searches online databases and matches document information with patron requests.
- Provides various clerical support services.
- Carries out policies established by the Board of Trustees, always dealing with the public in a professional manner.
- Effectively communicates the library’s activities and services to the public in the library.
- Demonstrates a commitment to learning new skills and ideas that support the library’s mission and goals.
- Participates in all staff meetings.
- Performs other duties as required by the Director.
Required Knowledge:
- Knowledge of library services, principles, practices, and procedures, including copyright and confidentiality laws.

- Knowledge of research techniques.
- Operational knowledge of standard office and AV equipment.
- Knowledge of computer technology (hardware/software) including automated library systems, CD-ROM products and the Internet.
- Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system and modified cataloging.
- Knowledge of filing techniques.
- Knowledge of the New Hampshire State Library database, including the Interlibrary Loan and Search modules.
Required Skills:
• Skills in communication sufficient to ensure quality services to diverse public library users.
- Skills in use of a computer.
- Ability to work on a multi-task-oriented basis as needed.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes days, evening, weekends, and emergencies.
- Ability to use a networked computer system to obtain information from a variety of software applications.
- Ability to use the Internet to obtain credible research information.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree preferred. A combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skill and ability, may be considered.
