Library Assistants are members of a Library's support staff. Their duties might include helping patrons find reference materials, reshelving books, working the circulation desk, handling online requests and interlibrary loans, processing new Library cards and conducting inventory. They also might oversee Library events, such as book sales, reading programs, entering new materials into the database, updating social media, book readings or movie nights.
Duties:
• Greets and assists Library users in the circulation area employing effective customer service skills.
• Performs all circulation area functions effectively including check-ins, check-outs, renews, and processing applications for new Library cards.
• Shelves, shelf-reads and organizes collections and keeps materials in good order.
• Staffs the children's room, and other areas of the Library as necessary.
• Responsible for Library opening and closing procedures.
• Informs Library users of Library policies and enforcing them when necessary.
• Processes overdue materials, including contacting borrowers by phone, email, mail, or text.
• Fields requests for new acquisitions and interlibrary loans.
• Assists Library users in making photocopies and help with computer programs.
• Receives phone calls, and assists or transfers calls as necessary.
• Processing and entering new materials into the database.
• Updating patron and bibliographic records.
• Provides reference and reader's advisor services, instructs patrons in the use of Library resources, including reference materials, subscription databases, catalogs, computers, and the interlibrary loan system.
• Updates and monitors the Library social media accounts.
• Other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications:
• Associate Degree required Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Computer skills sufficient to perform the functions of the online catalog and circulation modules of the Library’s automated system.
• Desire to meet and serve the Library's user community.
• Good clerical skills and attention to detail required.
• Demonstrates appropriate flexibility in dealing with a diverse population.
Physical Demands:
The work is typically performed indoors while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching or walking. The employee frequently lifts objects and uses equipment requiring dexterity.
